Handbook of Current English 4
Porter Gale Perrin, Jim Wayne Corder
Handbook of Current English has, from the first edition, been based on Porter G. Perrin’s pioneering philosophy of appropriateness in language usage, a principle now almost universally accepted. Recognizing that "good English" need not always be a formal language — contemporary writers and speakers use language in many ways, and to good effect — the Handbook shows the importance of being selective in language use. It is designed to show students how and why some forms of expression are more effective and, for college writing, more appropriate than others, and to help them learn to make the best choices. Finally, the Handbook is based on the principle that a "good" language is a language decently suited to its speaker or writer, to the subject at hand, and to the audiences that receive the language.
